Exploring Catalina

Last weekend I jetted off to SoCal for a 4 day mini-vacation. My first full day there my friend, Caroline and I were up bring and early for a day trip to Catalina. We were doing the "Zip and Ship" which was a package that included the ferry and zip lining! Despite living in SoCal for a year and being back numerous times since I had never been to Catalina so I was very excited to finally visit and it did not disappoint. This little island is SO beautiful!

The Casino building is probably the most recognized building of Catalina! It has been restored and the first floor now holds a movie theatre while the second floor is used for functions.

We were dressed for zip lining which you'll hear about in a separate blog post. The weather was cool (low 60s) and varied from being overcast to sunny throughout the day which was fine with me because it was still way warmer than Boston!

Caroline actually has a friend from high school who lives on the island. They are from Kansas City, MO and hasn't seen each other in years but Caroline messaged her on the ferry ride over and Shawna ended up giving us a little tour of the island (in her golf cart - 25 year wait list to bring a real car onto the island)! I really wanted to go see the buffalo but we didn't have time to go to that part of the island so I had to settle for this statue. Did you know that the reason there are buffalo on the island is because the Hollywood movie producers brought them on for a movie back in the day?! I thought that was kind of cool. Oh and the Wrigley family once owned a lot on the island and brought the Chicago Cubs there for Spring Training each year (for 30 years). They had a replicate of the ballpark there as well as a Clubhouse which is now the Catalina Island Club House.

Shawna told us all about island life since she has lived there for over twenty years now and her husband is a native! It was really interesting to hear about living there and seeing things both from a tourist perspective as well as a local person's perspective!

We had a great day exploring Catalina. As you can see from the above photos it has so much natural beauty! I'll be back with photos from our zip lining adventures tomorrow!
