Visiting Portland Head Light and Fort Williams Park

In the last week I've been to New York and Maine.  This translates to many blog worthy photos!  I'll be sharing my NYC posts soon but until then I thought I would share some of what I did this weekend.  I have a close college friend who lives in Portland, ME and I had the chance to visit her this weekend.  I had never been to Portland Head Light and Fort Williams Park so I was happy to visit it during this trip.  It has a beautiful lighthouse and cool old fort dating back to WWI!

Portland Head Light

Portland Head Light
Portland Head Light is one of the most photographed and picturesque lighthouses in the county and I'm sure you can see why.  Construction began all the way back in 1787 and it was lit for the very first time in 1791 aka a very long time ago. . .

Ram Island Lighthouse
From Fort Williams Park you can see another lighthouse, Ram Island Ledge Light.  It was completed in 1905 and is on the national register of historic places.

Fort Williams ParkWithin Fort Williams Park is the Goddard Mansion.  It was actually a home to John Goddard and his family back int eh 1800s.  The ruins are very cool and while you can't actually go inside you can get right up close to them.

Cape Elizabeth
There are also several areas with remnants of the old fort which you can check out while at Fort Williams Park.  The entire park is beautiful with amazing views.  I highly recommend a visit and make sure you bring a picnic to stay awhile.  You'll be glad you did!

  4. It's been awhile since I have been to Portland but I love Maine. I just was at Marshall Point and I love that one. The house in front of that one is gorgeous though.
