Gilenya: One Year Later

Today is the 1 year anniversary of my first dose of Gilenya!  I can't believe it has already been a year since I stopped doing weekly injections.  Would you believe that most Friday nights I still get that feeling that I should be doing something and then I remember that I don't have to give myself an Avonex injection anymore!  Best.Feeling.Ever!

I don't think I've blogged much about my "Gilenya Experience" since my first dose.  Know why?  There isn't much to say.  It is all good!  No side effects.  No issues remembering to take my pill (I talk other medications and vitamins every morning anyways).  No needing to keep it in the fridge.  No sticking myself with a needle.  So easy!  Love it!

I think the most important thing I want to point out is that having the option to do an oral treatment for MS is HUGE.  When I was diagnosed {almost} six years ago there were NO ORAL TREATMENTS.  The only options were injections.  Now in that short amount of time there are THREE oral treatments.  That means if one oral treatment doesn't work (like how I couldn't tolerate Tecifdera since it made me sick) there is STILL another oral option before resorting back to injections.  And even a third option after that if needed.  Huge people.  Research and treatment options have come a long way in a short amount of time.

That is thanks to all of YOU!  All of you who have supported me during the past six years.  All of you who have donated a dollar or hundreds of dollars.  All of you who have come to one of my fundraising events.  All of you who have prayed for a cure.

THANK YOU!  Your support has made  a difference in my MS journey.  I'm so thankful for all of you.

In 28 days I will once again walk 50 miles in 3 days at the MS Challenge Walk on Cape Cod.  If you would like to make a donation in honor of this very special anniversary you can do so here.

  1. It's so awesome to know that you haven't had any side effects. Any oral med is going to be way better than needing to do injections. Congrats on your year anniversary!

  5. Just found your blog as I was searching for first dose experience on Gilenya. Got diagnosed earlier this year and Just started gilenya; so far so good. So great to hear your experience has been good. I would love to know how to get involved with MS awareness/walks in my area etc. Also, i see you drink socially. Is it ok to do that while taking Gilenya?
