I had full intentions of blogging this morning.  I got up early to do it before work.  After my alarm went off I reached for a 2nd pillow to prop under my head. As I raised my head/shoulders I felt something pull.  Ouch!  My back went out and this was the first time for my upper back to be the issue.  Usually it is my lower back.  I took 4 Advil and stopped at CVS on my way to work for a heat wrap (those things are amazing).  Fortunately I have a previously schedule massage on Thur night so that should help a lot.  Feeling ok and hoping after the massage I'll feel great.

Anyways. . . I wanted to tell you all about the MAAV Walk and Candlelight Vigil.  This was the 18th year for this event and it just gets bigger and better every year!

Our theme was "Stories That Move Us" and we had a community art project where people could share their story on a foot.  We then displayed the feet all over the cafeteria.

Purple is the awareness color for DV so we had a purple path around the room.  It looks really nice!  It was fun to check out all the feet made by so many different people in the community.

The room was packed with close to 500 people.  We had a record breaking 45 teams this year.  It is so inspiring to see so many young people at this event.  There are kids of all ages who participate and it is great to know their awareness is being raised at such a young age.  Education is key to prevention and these kids are learning young that violence is not ok.

Each year we light a candle in honor of each victim who has been killed in MA.  This year there were 9 victims.  The smallest amount ever but still 9 too many.  As each candle is lit the name of the victim is read. Since this can be a heavy topic for the little ones we offered face painting in another room for them.

I figured someone should try out the purple awareness ribbon.  The face painters went to the trouble to have that as one of the options. . . so why not!?  Don't worry I didn't cut in front of any of the little kids.  They were all out walking.  Haha!

While all the walkers were out on the route we were inside getting all the snacks ready.  We always have plenty of sweet treats ready for when they return!

After snacks the raffle winners are selected.  I had to leave the event for about 20 minutes to see a private practice client with the plan of returning to help with clean up.  Well while I was gone they picked the winners and they picked my name for 2 out of 3 of the raffles.  Now if I had been there I would have been very embarrassed and I likely would have donated 1 of the prizes back.

When I returned to the event my fellow board members told me the news.  I was SHOCKED!  How exciting!!!!  So I won the "money tree" filled with gift cards and I won the "Treat Yourself" which includes a massage gift card and a teeth whitening gift card.  I've always wanted to get my teeth whitened by a dentist but could never afford it so I am SO excited about this.  It is a $350 value.

So while I feel a little guilty about winning the prizes there is nothing I could do about it since I wasn't there.  I guess I'll just have to enjoy my winnings and keep volunteering to give back.

All and all a GREAT event.  MAAV raised over $30,000 (still waiting for the final total).  That money is going to be put to such great use in the community.  Hopefully next year there will be even less victims than this year.
