Head of the Charles Regatta

As I mentioned yesterday I attended the Head of the Charles Regatta (HOCR) this weekend. The HOCR has been taking place since 1965 and despite living within walking distance to the Charles River I had only been once before!  Finally this year I had time to go again and I'm so glad I did because it was a beautiful weekend!

The HOCR has been happening since 1965 and there are over 9,000 athletes that participate and over 300,000 spectators.  I can't believe that many people are along the Charles River during this weekend.  That is a crazy amount of people!  This is SUCH a well organized event that you would never know there are that many people.  It runs so smoothly!

If I'm being completely honest the fried dough may have been a bigger motivator to getting me there than the actual events ! What can I say. . . I love some fried dough loaded with powdered sugar!

In addition to watching the crew events on the river there is a lot of other things going on.  You can shop, eat and party in all the tents.  There are numerous vendors there including mini stores from New Balance and Brook Brothers just to name a couple.

If this picture doesn't say CREW I don't know what does.  I had a chuckle to myself while watching this group cheer on their team!

The colors along the river are gorgeous this time of year and made for the perfect backdrop for the events!  I couldn't get over some of the trees.  So pretty!

Oh and you should definitely watch where you are going.  While I was staring off into the river. . . or at the trees with their pretty foliage. . . or maybe I was dreaming of more fried dough. . . I got knocked in the head by a boat or a "shell" as I guess it is officially called.  Yeah that was embarrassing.  Luckily it was just a bump and not that hard. But seriously these boats are being carried through crowds with thousands of people not paying attention.  Not a good mix!

And just for fun had to jump in this huge chair for a photo op! Ha!

It was a nice afternoon and I'm glad I went!  Not if it was cold I don't think it would be quite as fun so if you ever come keep your fingers crossed that it is a beautiful weekend like this one!

  1. Love the foliage shots!

Every morning on the way in on the train I love looking out when we go over the river and seeing crews out rowing.

  2. I live in the Midwest. My son went to West Point and competed at HOTC during his four years there. We've only gone to spring regattas, so I never considered how beautiful the trees were where he went in the fall. Thanks so much for blogging about your outing and taking me there through you. Fun!

  3. Looks like a really cool event. And the foliage is absolutely beautiful!!! And fried dough with powdered sugar? Yes please! That would be my reason for going, haha! Sorry that you got hit in the head. That is no bueno!

  4. These pictures of the race look right out of the book, "A Separate Peace." Gosh-- fall is beautiful up there!
