It's Valentine's Day. . .

but for me today was not a day about flowers, candy and romance.
For me today was about a dying patient, a critically ill patient and many other very sick patients.
It was a day filled with sadness and sickness and death.
Days like today are still filled with love but not happy love, instead it is love filled with sadness.

Don't get me wrong . . .
I love my job as a medical social worker.
I love working in a hospital.
I love helping my patients.
I love helping my patient's family members.
I love counseling them and supporting them and guiding them.
I love the fulfillment I get from helping.
But today I am sad.
I am sad that people get sick.
I am sad that people die.
I am sad that life isn't easy or fair.

Today I count my blessings once more.
I, despite having a chronic illness, am HEALTHY.
My family members are healthy.
My friends are healthy.
I am thankful that I have a job and an apartment and a car and SO much more.
I am appreciative of my family who always supports me and my friends who always make me laugh.

Today, even though there is sadness and even though bad things happen to good people I am going to CHOOSE to be happy and thankful and grateful and strong.
Today is Valentine's Day.
Today is a day about LOVE.
I'm lucky to have a lot of love in my life (even though I'm single - but that is a whole other post haha)!

Thank you to everyone who loves me.
Thank you to everyone who supports me.
Days like today I need a lot of love and support.
